Table of Contents
First Week of Advent
1. Live Oak Weather Station
1.1. /dev/ttyUSB0 not found after reboot
2. Mahogany Napkin holder
Actually without dovetails, finished with tung oil.
3. Neighborhood fence building
On hiatus.
4. Waffle Trivet
Need to make something for "Trish the Younger".
5. EPICS
5.1. Various applications built (medm,vdct)
5.2. Studying IOC construction
Most straightforward approach to integrating ersatz pieces of equipment is to use SCPI interfaces (already started for the U3HV) for the devices, and then EPICS StreamDevice IOCs for the EPICS interface.
6. AVB networking
Noticed some IETF RFCs on "DETNET" (Deterministic Networking)
https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc8655.txt
I initially thought that this had something to do with Daniel E. Talayco, but then realized it is built on top of, for example, 802.1 AVB/TSN.
Resurveying the GMP2K networking landscape from 2018, I see that nothing much has changed; it's still over $500 for an AVB switch.
Interestingly, Microchip has a very nice 7 port 100Mb AVB switch part with 5 PHYs and a 1000 Mb RGMII uplink for around $10 from Digikey, so from a BOM cost perspective, why isn't there a little 5-10 port AVB switch for ~$100?, other than no one thinks there's a market for one. Unlike some companies I am familiar with, the datasheet is not under NDA and has what looks like complete register descriptions.
